Written Activity

1. Written Activity #1: Your Past & Future Via Anthropology
This assignment is the first of a series of activities called "Public Anthropology" that we will do this semester.  It is inspired by Margaret Mead's engagement with wider publics - not just other anthropologists.  The world, it seems, could benefit from a more anthropological perspective.  What is anthropology, what kinds of questions or issues does it raise for you, and how are the skills applicable?  What is the "Big Question" that interests you?  This is what we are ultimately getting to.

Objective: To think about and synthesize your anthropological learning these past years, and to articulate to nonspecialist audiences the complexities of bringing an anthropological approach to a human problem.
Outcome: Discussing the ethics, benefits, and pitfalls of bringing an anthropological approach to wider publics.

First, read the following articles assigned:
a. Ingold (2018)

Harnessing the Science of Persuasion

After reading the article, Harnessing the Science of Persuasion,

This is less than two full pages of reading. The page numbers indicate the actual numbers printed on the pages of the pdf, not the numbers Adobe assigns to the document.

Respond to Newman's's The Idea of a University (selected passages) in at least 250 words.  Your response should be critical in nature.  In other words, rather than summarizing the text or saying how you liked/disliked it, discuss some element of the text and analyze how that element affects your understanding of the text.

Note: Be careful. You might have an article with a technical subject that isnt directed to a technician audience. In "My 5-Paragraph-Theme Theme" Ed White uses the format of the 5-paragraph essay to demonstrate how the 5-paragraph essay can be limiting rather than helpful. Think about your own writing and how you have used the 5-paragraph essay. When have you used it in the past? How has it helped you in your writing? Taking White's essay into account, can you imagine a writing assignment where the 5-paragraph format would limit you rather than help you?
