Any topic (writer’s choice)

Responses to the reading will be due before class every Tuesday. Your response should be 250-350 words in length, but aside from that, the format is quite open-ended. Basically, I want you to show that youve done the readings and thought about them. In your response I want you to at least include the following:
2-3 sentences in which you try to summarize the authors main point(s), and perhaps thinking about key words or concepts that you noticed
Your reaction to the reading, which could include what surprised you, what confused you, what you disagreed with, what was left out.
Perhaps some comparative comments: comparing what you read to what you know about other religions or this religious tradition in other places; perhaps comparison with things weve already read or learned in this class.
Some questions that you are left with about the reading or the topic that you wish you had more information about.

Religion of Islam

Question: We covered a wide geographic and temporal expanse this week. If you could choose any of these times/places to live in, which would you choose? Why? (Be sure to support your answer with evidence from the readings.)
I would like you to answer the question and use the readings to help get information.
I want it to be around 300 words.

Theo 360 – Final paper

I have submitted the teacher note from the previous paper in pdf, and also I have sent all the papers back to you so you don't have to do a lot of writing, please follow the direction *****

**** Your research paper in final form is due October 12. The three theological statements due this week will become part of the material you present as your research paper next week, so this assignment is a head start on finishing your research paper (1500-1800 words); between this assignment and your rough draft, you will have much of your research paper completed before you enter week 7.  This will allow you next week to spend time editing your document for grammar, spelling, Turabian form, and general flow of the paper.  Do pay attention to the feedback I will have given you by now on your Research Paper Draft.

The student will write a 2,4002,700-word research-based paper in current Turabian format. The paper will focus on the importance of biblic

Settlement Views

The goal of this assignment is to assess different scholarly views on the conquest of Canaan as reported in the book of Joshua.

Recent scholarship has debated the reality of the biblical conquest (of Canaan) as recorded in the book of Joshua. Various theories have been proposed to explain the biblical narrative in some other fashion.

Create the following chart in a Word doc. Briefly research each of the four positions (see resource links and library sources, below) and then summarize the key points of that theory in the column provided. In the next column, provide an assessment of the theory in light of the biblical material.

Theory Name and support    Description of the main points of this theory. What makes it distinctive?    Assessment of each theory in light of the actural biblical record.
Military Conquest (Joshua)
Peaceful Infiltration (Alt/Noth)

Religious Environment of the Patriarchs Chart

The goal of this assignment is to observe the religious practices and environment of the Old Testament Patriarchs.

Scan through the book of Genesis noting where any of the Patriarchs or their wives encountered the Lord in worship to him or revelation from him. Create a list or chart of 4 columns as a Word doc, showing:

the biblical reference in Genesis
the person involved
the object (e.g., altar) and/or action (e.g.. sacrifice) involved
the name of God, if mentioned
Example:

Reference    Person    Object/Action    Name
13:18    Abram    altar built    Yahweh
Note:

Patriarchs will be limited to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob with their wives.
Religious practices include objects like the use of altars and pillars or actions like prayer and sacrifice and related encounters with the God of the Hebrews.

Mapping Abraham’s Journeys

The goal of this assignment is to visualize the travels of Abraham as he moved throughout the ancient Near Eastern world.

This assignment uses a program for making maps. You may use library resources, a Bible atlas, or your own Bible maps to trace Abraham's travels.

Read Genesis 11:31-13:18.
Go to Scripture Workshop (Links to an external site.) and click on the tab Biblical Geography.
Click on Abrahams Travels and download the blank map of Mesopotamia (Part A; choose PDF or PowerPoint).
Complete the map by inserting a textbox for each location for Abrahams travels (not Lot's) according to the locations given in Genesis 11:31-13:18. Use a line to show his travels from location to location.
Finally, upload your completed map in either PDF or PowerPoint format with your name on it.

Joseph in Culture

The goal of this assignment is to describe aspects of the Egyptian culture and how they interface with the biblical narrative.

Read Spender, "Joseph Narrative Outline."Preview the document
Scan the Joseph story in Genesis 37-50.
Identify and research 1 aspect of Josephs life that can be understood better in light of what we know about ancient Egyptian culture. Stay away from older sources as many older books use antiquated data from Egypt and do not use recent discoveries about ancient Egypt.
Write a paper on 1 aspect of Josephs life as illuminated by an understanding of ancient Egyptian culture. Identify what is known about ancient Egyptian practices or customs and how an understanding of ancient culture helps the reader to better grasp the meaning of the narrative (incident) in Josephs life.
Some ideas to consider might be:

Slavery and slave prices
Josephs position under Pharaoh
Famines of the Nile
Josephs dress/clothing
Dreams and dream interpr

Genesis 23: Patriarchal Customs

The purpose of this assignment is to explain some of the customs from Patriarchal times as understood from Genesis 23.

Read Genesis 23 carefully in preparation for this assignment. Note how the chapter names Sarah at the beginning and end of the negotiations (the literary term for this is called "inclusion"). This account, which records historical details about the death and burial of Sarah, has clear marks of a biblical narrative. The narrative marks the transition to Isaac and Rebekah, the next generation. Note the repeated phrases bury my/your dead and hear (listen to) me/us in verses 4, 6, 8, 11, 13, and 15. An outline of the chapter would be:

Notice of Sarahs death 1-2
Burial arrangements 3-7
Negotiations 8-15
Price & deed 16-18
Burial of Sarah 19-20
With the help of library and/or electronic resources (for example, Bible dictionary, Bible encyclopedia, Genesis commentary) answer the questions below. When you are finished, upload your completed ass
