Any topic (writer’s choice)

Write a five page paper, double space, on any topic covered in this course or related to the study of religion. The paper will be graded for both content and spelling and grammar. Establish a thesis paragraph (what you want to say) and then present intelligent arguments, using material that was covered in the course.  Again, there is no right or wrong answers. Your paper can be pro- or anti- religion, as long as it is coherent and well written.

2-3 sentences in which you try to summarize the authors main point(s), and perhaps thinking about
key words or concepts that you noticed
Your reaction to the reading, which could include what surprised you, what confused you, what you
disagreed with, what was left out.
Perhaps some comparative comments: comparing what you read to what you know about other
religions or this religious tradition in other places; perhaps comparison with things weve already read or
learned in this class.
Some questions that you are left with about the reading or the topic that you wish you had more
information about.

These responses are very open-ended and I dont have strict guidelines for how I want you to
structure them. Basically, I want you to engage with the assigned readings (if we are reading
more than one text ie. several short stories or excerpts please just respond to one of them) in
some fashion. The idea behind this assignment is to start you thinking about the literature so
youll be ready for our discussions when we have our class meetings.

THEOLOGY

In your paper, you will interact with two theologians and how they approach the Bible.

For one of the theologians, you may pick any one of the Christians that you read in the Global Perspectives part of the course.
For the second theologian, I want you to read a  short article by Donavon Riley short article by Donavon Riley - (PDF LINK ON BOTTOM) He graduated from CSP and has gone on to be a Lutheran pastor. You can also get the article from his blog here.
You will select one of these well-loved texts as the focus for your project.
Genesis 8:13-22
Ruth 1:6-17
Psalm 27:1-14
Isaiah 25:6-10
Matthew 6:5-15
Luke 15:11-24
John 15:1-11
Romans 8:31-39
Your Signature Project will have the following sections:

Introduction to the Project including a thesis statement (a one -sentence summary of how you will answer the question in the conclusion).
Discussion of the text itself showing your ability to state its historical/cultural and literary

theology

1) A two-part question:
-If you were living at the time of Jesus under Roman occupation, how might you have reacted to Jesus claiming that the Kingdom of God is here?
-I ask you to assume the voice of one of the global perspectives in this module and discuss the implications to that perspective of  Jesus claiming that the Kingdom of God is here.

2) Pick a parable that is important or meaningful to you and tell us why.

3) We looked at two portraits of the death of Jesus (in the Gospels of Mark and John).  Which one speaks better to American culture today? Why?

4) Do you see the variety and differences in the resurrection accounts as problems to be solved, as reasons to reject these accounts, or as evidence to support the resurrection? Why?

5) In my introductory video I talked about each Gospel having a three-part structure where the first part focuses on God as Creator, the second part focuses on human vocation in the Holy Spirit

Acts

****Hello I have attached the template for the assignment. Please Please follow the directions as written, thank you very much.****

Complete this assignment as you read the book of Acts during this term, and submit it in Module 8. For each chapter of Acts, provide a title followed by one significant verse from that chapter that supports the title, and then list the three most significant events or elements in each chapter. Be sure that the title for each chapter captures the primary events of the chapter.  Be clear and specific. The title will be created by putting each chapters content into a single sentence and then narrowing it to a title, such as Stephens Message before the Sanhedrin Leads to His Martyrdom for chapter 7 or The Jerusalem Council Concludes that Salvation is Apart from Circumcision and Moses Law for chapter 15. Following the title, write out one significant verse from that chapter that supports the title. Its not enough to give a verse reference; write out

Any topic (writer’s choice)

Responses to the reading will be due before class every Tuesday. Your response should be 250-350 words in length, but aside from that, the format is quite open-ended. Basically, I want you to show that youve done the readings and thought about them. In your response I want you to at least include the following:
2-3 sentences in which you try to summarize the authors main point(s), and perhaps thinking about key words or concepts that you noticed
Your reaction to the reading, which could include what surprised you, what confused you, what you disagreed with, what was left out.
Perhaps some comparative comments: comparing what you read to what you know about other religions or this religious tradition in other places; perhaps comparison with things weve already read or learned in this class.
