2nd/3rd paragraph - How are the people of Paraguay struggling during the time of this film? Why are characters so desperate to the point that they are willing to risk everything for these boxes? Briefly touch on the socioeconomic crisis in Paraguay at the time.
4th paragraph/conclusion - what was the director of this film trying to show us about the struggling state of Paraguay? What is the overall theme/message of the film?

1. Compare and contrast sacred and secular music in America. (Some ideas about how to approach that are below, but feel free to explore the topic in other ways. -Why did the founding fathers separate church and state in the first amendment to the Constitution?
-Is it sometimes unclear whether a particular piece of music is sacred or secular?
-Is all holiday (holy day) music sacred?
-In multi-cultural and multi-religious America, how should a person deal with the sacred music from a belief system other than their own?
Definitions: Sacred music is about a deity and/or service to or belief in a transcendent power or purpose.
Secular music pertains to ordinary, worldly concerns, such as personal relationships, economic conditions, social situations, etc.
Background information: The separation of church and state is a foundational concept
This is a paper analyzing two pieces of music: Suite Francaise, and Suite of Old American Dances. You only need to cover the first two movements of each piece. Each of the pieces should account for half of the word count.
The following is the criteria for the paper:
The student evaluates music by thoroughly deconstructing the repertoire, and determining the manipulation of, and relationships between, identified musical elements and compositional devices, communicating detailed and substantiated judgments about how these relate to context and genre and the expressed style.
To DECONSTRUCT means to identify:
musical elements and how theyve been used by the artist (pitch, rhythm, timbre etc)
compositional devices (repetition, sequence, inversion, randomness, serialism, etc)
You should also identify if/how these two things relate to each other (for instance, maybe each time the music repeats the artist plays more softly?)
To EVALUATE means to make judgmen
Answer ONE of the following questions.
