Matterhorn Patent Analysis

How do text and diagrams work in patents to explain the function of a ride? Carefully read the "Patent for the Matterhorn BobsledsPreview the document" (under "Primary Source Material" for Module IV), then describe how the ride operates (as outlined in the patent) and explain the key innovations and features of the ride.

Pay particular attention to how movement and the different parts of technology are illustrated in the drawings and explain how reading (across the text and illustrations) communicates the function of the ride. This paper should explain how text and illustrations work together to explain the operation of technology via a document. This paper should make an argument about a specific feature of the Matterhorn. Because this is an analysis of the patent, you should use BOTH the words and images that are in the patent as you make your argument. One of the most challenging parts of this assignment will be reading through the patent because it is long and rather technica

Any topic (writer’s choice)

Pick one scene that impressed you most from the film. Explain how and why that particular scene is impressive to you. Refer to the assigned reading and think about how your argument is related to it. Include the image(s) from the scene in your journal. The expression of your paper needs to be clear (correct grammar; clear meanings of words). Your argument needs to have a structure (introduction, explanation, conclusion)

In addition, separately from your argument on a scene, write down the keyword from the lecture, which the instructor gives, in your response paper. Also, briefly explain the reason why that is the keyword of the sequence in one sentence.(The keyword is XXX because ....) The reason should be clear by thelecture. You do not need to repeat exactly what the instructor says. Use your own words to explain.

Keyword is: Duality

Film: Ugetsu(Ugetsu monogatari, Mizoguchi Kenji, 1953)

Art History

Watch Zoe Strother, Masks and the Uncanny, in Africa and Beyond, a recorded lecture at the Getty Research Institute (October 2, 2018).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XesbBP6PChM

Begin the video at 9:20 (skip the pre-Intro) and stop at 57 mins. (when the lecture ends and audience Q & A starts).  Make sure to watch on full screen so you can clearly see the screen-within-screen of recorded lecture format.

Strother is probably the most well-respected scholar of African masks and masquerades in the US.  She has written extensively against the TRANSFORMATION HYPOTHESIS, something she explains in the lecture.  What is the transformation hypothesis, and how does Strother amend or critique it?

note: Her anecdotes about how the Pende view the masks (about 44 mins. in) are especially fun and perceptive.

History of Performance Art

INSTRUCTIONS:

Writers can decide whether they wanted to do a formal analysis, historical/contextual analysis, or an Iconographic Analysis. Please let me know if you need any extra resources to finish this up.

Artist for the topic: Marina Abramovi

Please follow the instruction below for objectives, guidelines, and citation requirements.

Objective:

To delve deeper into the life and work of one performance artist, so as to make original, insightful connections between the artists life/biography and the performance art they create. This is a creative and critical writing assignment, not a school book-report, so avoid a simple list of activities and achievements by the artist. We want a perceptive piece of writing, a cross between an art critic and a therapist, making new and astute observations about the artists issues, inspirations, and contributions.

Guidelines:

1. While you certainly want to give us an overview of their entir

art

artwork, architecture or design you choose should be something you would see in a major gallery/museum or Art history text. They can be any medium from any time period but should be related in some way (formal qualities, concept, content, etc). You should collect all the data that you can, regarding these two works such as title, date, medium, artist, etc

Use the essay writing workshop listed in the module as a guide on how to begin the compare and contrast process.

Once you have gathered as much information as possible about the works, researching outside of the textbook, narrow your information down to the 5 most relevant pieces of information for each. Compare and contrast these and brainstorm on how they relate to one another. Finally, propose an essay question as you would see on a test that would prompt an informed response. This process will mirror what we did as a class exercise on Thursday October, and will provide framework for a focused essay with a clear thesi
