AMERICAN HISTORY AFTER 1865

HIS 105

WEEK 3 RESPOND TO A PEER:

I decided to discuss option three, how the American Industrial Era affected Asian immigrants in the west. Hierarchy of races was discussed in the textbook (chapter 18, p.329) and described immigrants as less sophisticated and less capable than those of other races. Because of the Homestead Act it was appealing for Immigrants and thus they traveled and moved west in hopes of a better life. One of the things that Asian immigrants faced was foreign miners tax. This caused most of them to not work in that field and instead that would work in the railroad industry. They actually made up 90 percent of the workforce at one point. (Chapter 18. p.348) They were often known to work for less wage than that of the white worker and therefore would be hired more than whites, which caused anger for the white workers. The biggest impact that the government had on the Asian immigrants was the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 (p. 349) it banned the immigration of Chinese laborers for 10 years and prohibited immigrants already in the United States from becoming citizens. This remained law all the way until 1943, which is astonishing to me. IN the 1870’s Chinese immigrants were forced into segregation, they now self-segregate by having communities such as Chinatowns. However, this allows them to have their own world and culture here in the United States. I think that the immigrants have adapted to today’s society and have booming businesses in their Chinatown districts. I think that if the Asian Immigrants were to face the same issues today that the laws and government are more advanced and cultured and therefore they would not have dealt with issues such as the act of 1882.

WEEK 5 DISCUSSION

Part 1: Post a Response

After the end of World War I, overall economic growth exploded in the US in the early 1920s, but then there was a severe economic breakdown with the Great Depression of 1929-1939.

Choose and discuss (in a full paragraph or two) one of the following two topics related to the 1920s and1930s.

1.    The textbook highlights the significant emergence of new cultural trends due to improved technology (radio, movies, photography) and the spread of books & magazines (writers) in the roaring 1920s as well as in the 1930s, and also to new movements like the Harlem Renaissance, consumerism, and new norms for women.
Consider the new technology of radio and photography. With specific examples from the 1920s, discuss how these new technologies helped one of the movements and trends above.

Explain whether you think this helped to develop a more unified national culture or more individuality, and identify a similar example today with technology helping a trend or movement.

Identify the source(s) where you read about the trend of the 1920s.
2.    The Great Depression (1929-1939) was one of the most devastating economic downturns that America has ever experienced. Determine whether you believe that the federal responses to the Great Depression by President Franklin Roosevelt encouraged real economic growth and confidence or whether the arguments by critics of the day were accurate that it made the Depression last longer.
Identify your position and support it with at least two specific examples of New Deal responses.
Provide a rationale for your response.
From this historical experience, identify any lessons for today for handling or avoiding severe economic downturns in the U.S. economy.
Identify the source(s) where you read about the New Deal responses.

Part 2: Respond to a Peer
Read a post by one of your peers and respond, making sure to extend the conversation by asking questions, offering rich ideas, or sharing personal connections.

WEEK 3 RESPOND TO A PEER:

Plagiarism to me is using somebody else’s work, research or quotes and passing them off as your own. In some cases your thoughts may sound similar to someone else’s work but not entirely word for word and this could be viewed as unintentional.
Copy and pasting information from the Internet is no different than typing up the information straight from a book. You are intentionally taking somebody’s work and using it as your own. If you copy and paste information from the Internet be sure to quote it and site it in your work. You can look up information to get ideas but you have to use any information in your own words an example of that would be looking up todays stock market numbers. You can get the information from anywhere on the net but not use it in a plagiarism way.
The maximum index score taken from the policy is 25%. If you score higher than that you will be given one chance to resubmit for a possible grade of 80%. This is of course if it is not deemed to be an intentional act of plagiarism. If you do it again your issue will be forwarded to student affairs for review.
