Strategy as Practice & Leadership – Section B: Strategic Knowledge Management
The assessment for this element of the module is an essay-based piece of coursework worth 50% of the overall module grade.
Task:
“The only way to cope with a changing world is to keep learning.” (Dixon 1998)
Critically discuss the Dixon quote in relation to the way that SST can develop an organisation’s intellectual capital.
A strong essay will use the key themes addressed in the second part of the module to develop the analysis, namely:
- Knowledge Management/Environment
- Intellectual Capital & Social Capital
- Communities of Practice
- Soft Systems Thinking
A thematic approach as suggested above is advised
Organisational examples can be used to illustrate the themes covered in the essay. However, the essay is not a case study, it is a theoretical paper.
Remember that a critical study aims to provide a balanced analysis of differing perspectives, and points of view, before drawing the argument to a coherent conclusion
Required: A word processed essay with referencing to literature. The essay will be 3,000 (+/- 10%) words (inclusive of appendices, NOT inclusive of references).
HINT:
when writing your essay ask yourself, Is this actually helping me discuss the relationship between systems thinking and intellectual capital and the way knowledge can be developed and grown within an organisation?
The learning thread that the dixon quote picks up should be used during your discussion/analysis.
Because the idea of learning is what links all the four themes
- You can’t develop your knowledge base without Learning about something
- Intellectual capital is learning about how the organisation is and the way it frames this knowledge
- Communities of a practice is only about learning from each other and learning about how to develop your particular area of interest and expertise
- Checklands argument of systems thinking was that it’s a learning mechanism to enable people to think better and more about what is going on around them
