Part A Overview
In Part A of Unit One, you will study the special relationship between power and leadership. By its very nature, leadership implies that a person, or group, wields more power over others than normal. Throughout history, this power has often been absolute; however, in modern business, political, and other settings (such as religion), leaders are more able to coerce their followers into doing certain things or living in a particular manner. This kind of power structure means that ethical behavior is imperative for any social structure involving a leader, and that the leader embodies these principles more rigidly. You will examine some of the ethical

Part A Overview
In Part A of Unit Two you will examine the nature of duty in relationship to leadership. First, you will read Kant’s arguments about acting upon the basis of duty and then go on to Williams and Confucius — all who rely in different ways upon a concept of duty as essential to the morality of an action. Kant’s theory differs because he shows how duty comes from the highest level of practical reasoning. On the other hand, Confucius shows that duty is part of the organic unity of a social group.

In Part B of Unit One, you will study the relationship between virtue and the public and private morality of leaders. A casual glance at the news reveals a continual assault on the private moral actions of political leaders and public figures. This emphasis upon moral virtue has been expanded by the intense media scrutiny under which famous people, especially leaders, live. In this section, you will see examples of virtue-based ethics and public figures. Try to relate the study to contemporary examples from the news.

Part B Overview
In Part B of Unit Two you will study “utilitarianism,” a philosophical position that focuses on outcome as the basis of evaluating moral good. This is different from the focus on intention that you saw in Kant earlier. In this section, you will see how some things are done for the “greatest good” and, from the case studies, see many problems with outcome-based morality. You will also read Rawls, who believed that he could combine the best from Kant and Mill.

If you were tasked with explaining brain-compatible learning, differentiated instruction, social-emotional development, "Habits of Mind," "Marzano’s Cluster of Strategies," "21st Century Skills," problem-based learning, and authentic learning to a group of educators, what would you say? How would you compare and contrast the strategies so they understand the uniqueness of each while still seeing how they are interconnected?
