Brexit
As a newly minted expert geographer you have been invited by the newsletter editor you%u0432%u0402%u2122re your town%u0432%u0402%u2122s International Center to write a short article explaining the Brexit vote to members in the organization%u0432%u0402%u2122s monthly newsletter. Your town has ties to Great Britain through its sister cities program and folks are interested in learning from a local expert who may have a different perspective than what they see in typical news coverage. The editor is not interested in an opinion piece (for or against something), but rather would like you to produce an explanatory essay that draws upon your geographical expertise. Having considered the assignment, you have narrowed down the assignment to answering the following question:
From a geographical perspective why did voters in Great Britain vote to leave the European Union?
Write a 2 to 3-page essay answering the above question. The purpose of your essay is to offer a geographically informed explanation of the factors that led to the exit vote in the Summer of 2016. Assume that the audience for your essay has a basic familiarity with the overall issue of the Brexit vote but has not read what you have read and may not be well informed about what it means to approach a problem from a geographical perspective. This means that you have two essential tasks: explain what it means to analyze a problem from a geographical perspective and explain the Brexit vote.
The format/genre for this assignment is a short explanatory essay. This means that your paper will have a thesis statement that outlines your argument. Because of the limited length your thesis statement should name the factors that you believe explain the Brexit vote to make it easy for readers to immediately grasp your points. Again because of limited length you probably should focus in detail on only the most important factors that help you to explain the vote. Certainly you should discuss no more than three major factors. Your paper should also support its arguments with evidence from the readings you have been assigned. You should cite your sources using the Chicago Manual of Style author-date format described in Citing Sources in GEO 101. While such citations do not typically appear in newsletter articles you may be familiar with, the international center audience is well educated and appreciates scholarly writing (also one of the goals of the writing assignments in this class is to practice proper citation techniques and to learn to adapt to different styles of citation.) The citations also help to bolster the validity of your arguments. You do not need to do additional research for this assignment beyond the articles you have been assigned. If you do additional research anyway, be sure that you%u0432%u0402%u2122ve at least made use of the assigned articles.
