BIOPSYCHOSOCIAL ASSESSMENT AND TREATMENT

The first assignment will examine the practice behavior in accordance with CSWE

2.1.10a “develop a mutually agreed on focus of work and desired outcomes.”

Specifically, write an expanded biopsychosocial assessment of a client from your field

experience, outlined as follows:

Part 1: Describe your agency setting. How does the agency influence or reflect social

casework methods and how does it address your role and function as a social

worker as defined by this agency?

Part 2: Provide a biopsychosocial assessment (identifying data, presenting problem,

personal and family history, medical history, legal history, educational/vocational

history as it relates to presenting problem, mental health or social service

treatment history, current level of functioning, diagnostic impressions (DSM 5),

and prognosis based on strengths and challenges). Include the role of culture,

race, religion, class, and gender as they relate to the client’s experience of the

presenting problem.

Part 3: Summarize client contact to date (this can include a segment of process to

illustrate significant themes or to highlight client-worker dynamics). Also include

countertransferential material.

Part 4: Describe the treatment plan and interventions utilized (or plan to utilize). Define

and discuss the clinical practice theory that guides your work (e.g., solution

focused, systems perspective, ego psychology, etc.) and your rationale for

selecting this approach with this client.

Part 5: Describe and discuss the knowledge base of a particular population or issue (i.e.:

elderly, domestic violence) that is relevant to work with this client. Elaborate on

what skills are most indicated in working with this population.

Part 6: Briefly discuss an ethical position that applies to your work. If you’ve

experienced an ethical dilemma with this client(s) or agency (value conflicts,

conflicting values between agency and social work/personal vs. professional)

describe and discuss. If there’s been no ethical dilemma, briefly discuss how your

work reflects professional social work values (competence, self-determination,

etc.). Use the NASW Code of Ethics as a source.
