ASSESSMENT 3 BRIEF
MN5002 Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Leadership |
Assessment 3: Individual Research Report:
This is an individual assignment of 1500 words in which you will report on the entrepreneurial success of a business owner that you have identified and interviewed.
The Interview:
You are looking for a real business owner not a famous entrepreneur; web based material about a famous entrepreneur is not acceptable. You may use a family member but you must be able to remain objective to apply analytical thinking.
- You need to interview a business owner who you can argue is an entrepreneur.
- The business owner can be at any stage in the business cycle including, start-up, growth or in the process of selling the business. The business may be a sole-trader (1 person), a micro-business (1-9 employees) or larger.
- Your interview must be conducted on a one-to-one basis; however you may choose how you conduct the interview e.g. face-to-face, telephone, Skype etc.
- You will need to append a copy of the interview to your report; this must be a recording ( you can choose to transcribe but in addition to the recording)
You need to think about the questions you will ask them that will give you enough data to effectively analyse their responses to identify:-
- Good practices and improvement opportunities
- How their experience(s) relates to your knowledge of entrepreneurship
- How entrepreneurship knowledge and theory relates to practice in real life
- If, in your opinion, this person is a true entrepreneur or a small business owner who is not very entrepreneurial (use your conclusion to provide your argument for this)
You will be given additional support, during your lectures, to effectively collect, analyse and report qualitative data and identify how to draw down from your analysis to create and support an argument.
Interview Question Examples:-
What motivated you to start a business? How did you start/establish/grow the business?
What size is the business? Micro -enterprise or small to medium business (SME)?
(For SMEs) What is the organisational structure? Who does what in the organisation?
(For one person businesses) What made you choose going it alone?
What were your start-up activities? What skills did you need? Did you have a business plan?
What help did you get? What agencies, advisers or other support did you tap into?
How did you acquire funding? Or did you self-fund? What is your attitude to risk?
How do you use the web & social media for business?
What is your marketing/communications strategy? What are your future plans?
What mistakes did you make, and what did you learn from then? What would you do differently next time?
