LEH 301 Sport and the American City – Lehman College
The first of your two short papers based upon your reading of the assigned course texts will examine
the concept of creating a national identity within a sporting culture. The following information will
provide both the required format of the paper and the question. You must adhere to both in writing
your paper.
Format
Length – We will use a word count rather than a set number of pages; the text (not including citations
or title page) must be a minimum of 1500 words and no more than 2400 words.
Title Page – Provide an original title, your name, course title, and date of submission (and then insert a
page break or hit “Enter” to get to the second page where you will begin writing the body of your
paper).
Thesis – Your first paragraph should contain a clearly stated and originally worded thesis statement.
DO NOT simply reword the question into a statement – this is sloppy, bad writing. Use the thesis to
identify the specific position or argument you are going to analyze in your paper.
Citation Style/Endnotes – Any time you write information or ideas that are not your own or are not
common knowledge you need to provide the source. For this paper we will use endnotes and follow
the Chicago Manual of Style’s citation format. To insert an endnote at the end of a sentence you will
click on the References tab at the top of the page and then select the “Insert Endnote” option. The
citation will automatically be placed at the end of the text you have written. As you add to your paper
the endnotes will automatically be moved to the end of the text and will be re-numbered. For more

Reference Sources – You are expected to use Coney Island as the main source of examples and support
for your argument, whether direct quotations or paraphrased information. Additional sources may be
used but only in a limited manner, especially since the paper is an analysis of information on an
assigned text.
Works Cited/Bibliography – You do not need to provide a Works Cited page; the endnotes will list any
sources you are using and serve that function for this paper.
Plagiarism – Your work must be your own and original in accordance with Lehman’s policy on Academic
Integrity and Misconduct. If you plagiarize on this assignment you will receive an F (0%). Aside from

explore your ideas as they relate to the question. Use the book as the source for information and
examples to defend your positions.

center of culture and commerce to a relative wasteland and finally to a reborn iconic amusement
center, we are seeing a space directly related to the ever-changing needs and desires of the city (i.e.
New York City). With this idea at the center of your understanding of Coney Island, answer the
