Now that you’ve chosen an author, a text or texts, and are working to narrow the scope of your project so that you have an interesting but manageable focus, the next step in the process of writing the senior seminar thesis is to assemble and review all needed sources- both primary and secondary. Why is this theoretical/critical approach appropriate to your particular? What aspects of the literary text under study will you emphasize or carefully scrutinize in your analysis? Are you bringing together discrete fields of knowledge- if so, what fields and how might they speak to each other? Why does this topic interest you? What do you want your reader to learn/come away with after having read your projected paper/project? As you will note from these questions, we are still at the exploratory stage of writing wherein the goal is to figure out what we want to say. Therefore, consider the proposal neither as a contract, nor as a detailed outline, but rather as an advanced stage of meditation and speculation. Of course, you should have a clearer notion of your project than at the term’s beginning, but we’re still in the creative stage of our process. Annotated Bibliography: Assemble the critical sources that are necessary to complete your project. Give all bibliographic information in MLA Manual style. Write a brief (one paragraph) description of the source fit in with and supplement project? Aim to assemble a range of materials: * a biography of the author * author’s letters and correspondence, especially those surrounding the composition and publication of the work under study * Contemporary critical reception (i.e., reviews and critical pieces) from the time that your writer wrote that appraise his/her writing * recent articles & books (1990 and later) that offer an overview of how your chosen writer is currently understood and appreciated * theoretical writings of your chosen writer * appropriate theoretical articles & books * historical materials, especially cultural studies that help give you an overview of the zeitgeist of the period in which your chosen writer wrote Note: A successful scholar is usually eclectic and creative–a thinker who can bring together a number of source with the aim of shedding new light on old and familiar books and/or bringing new books and neglected information and thinking into the light.
