Brief
You are to advise your client on all necessary requirements to set up a timber merchants that would be expected to trade in both first fix joinery and roofing timber, e.g CLS, C16, C24 and sheet timber based materials and specialist timber for carpentry and restoration work e.g. English Oak, Ash and Elm.
The specialist section of the business will need to supply saw mill services and thickness and planning services.
1) The sourcing and supply of timber to a large extent, be controlled by legislation and practice and you need to fully investigate this aspect as part of the brief.
2) You will need to decide what criteria are necessary for storage and supply of timber.
3) You will be expected to identify markets the timber will be used in and services these markets expect.
4) You should also investigate how you can add value for the customer through the supply of timber.

The Report needs to focus around the following aspects, and they should be produced as a management report, as though they were being delivered to a client.
• Likely area of land required for the timber yard
• Schematic drawings of the proposed layout and required access routes/openings
• Number of Employees
• Project plan and project management method to setup the business
• A cash flow forecast for the 1st year of the business
• Financial controls to be used to monitor actual performance against cash flow forecast

The report should include the following elements within the areas detailed above:-
• Identified costing system and costs (30%)
• Financial control systems (20%)
• Project management systems (20)
• Management systems to be used (30%)
