The search for relevant literature was initially undertaken by using the CINAHL database, as Ellis (2013) suggests that high quality peer reviewed journal articles can be found there, and the advanced search option with Boolean mode was utilised. Within the advanced search, it was limited to research articles and the first key word was ?dignity?, yielding 1043 results. This number was reduced to 956 by defining the criteria of the year of publication to 2000-2015 to ensure the literature found was up to date and still relevant to practice. The key words ?dignity AND learning disabilities? was then searched for, however there were just four results. The term learning disability is synonymous with several other terms, albeit some rather outdated labels, so the search was widened to ?dignity AND learning disabilities OR intellectual disabilities OR mental retardation OR learning difficulties OR special needs? which then gave nine. As this was still quite a limited number of results, and perhaps not adequate to gain an informed insight into any emerging themes, the word ?respect? was added as the two terms are often interchangeable. This led to 110 results, enough to read and notice patterns within the texts. To gain a more detailed understanding, further searches were made on CINAHL of learning disability specific journals, such as the Journal of Intellectual Disabilities and the British Journal of Learning Disabilities, and the reference lists of articles and reviews found were studied in case the database had missed any useful articles. Upon identifying the common themes, communication, personal care and nurses? attitudes and understanding, these keywords were then searched for specifically in relation to learning disabilities.
