essay on the effects of the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution.
You have four sources: Parts of the movie To Live (1994); a chapter in Faribank, China; most of Gao, Zhou Enlai; and the entire Han, Unknown Cultural Revolution. What are the overall arguments on this issue? What evidence is used to back up the argument? How do the different sources (film, chapter, and two books) compare and contrast which each other. The last page or two should be about which interpretation or interpretations you found most persuasive and why. It is impossible to agree with all the arguments presented by all four authors (and director Zhang Yimou has two [or more?] different versions of the Cultural Revolution), so be selective based on how well the author backs up the argument in question. Do not try to make more points than can be accomplished thoroughly in your paper. It is better to make a few points well than many points poorly. You can either separate your paper by source (making each section about that book or film), or separate by central point. If you have decided on the central points you intend to make, treat each one as a separate section of your paper.
It will be necessary to refer to specific portions of the books or movie to illustrate your statements and conclusions, but it is generally not advisable to quote extensively (use up to six quotes, no more than twelve lines, total, and make endnotes for the materials everywhere you quote directly). Also, make endnotes for the ideas you borrowed, but you can save them all up to do a larger endnote at the end of the paragraph, but always right where you quote directly.
In terms of citation, use endnotes in the following Chicago style endnote system using Arabic numbers (1,2,3), not Roman numbers (i, ii, iii). For the first time you cite the ideas or the direct words an author, do the whole citation; the second or subsequent time, just use the examples in the second sentence of this paper. The last page of your paper will be titled NOTES and have the endnotes listed thereafter, no bibliography. The page does not count toward the 5-7 page length.
