For this paper, you will choose one issue or solution discussed in Half the Sky. You
must choose something specific – not simply “women are oppressed.” Some
examples of specific topics include: maternal mortality rates; female genital
mutilation; sex-trafficking; microfinance; building schools; etc. You must be specific
about where your issue takes place – simply saying “Africa” or “The Middle East” will
not be sufficient.
In your paper:
1. Identify and describe the issue, including its causes and effects, using
research from a number of sources (see below).
2. Present an argument (throughout) that persuades your audience that this is
an important issue that deserves action.
3. Present a plan of action, for either individuals, governments (specify which
governments), private charities, or another group.
You will complete your paper in a number of steps:
Thursday, March 27: Choose a topic, and write a paragraph (about half a
page) explaining what topic you chose and why.
Thursday, April 3: Complete an annotated bibliography of 6-7 sources, with
at least one non-textual source (i.e. a photograph, documentary, radio
broadcast, etc.). Half the Sky should be one of your sources.
Thursday, April 3: Identify an audience for your paper: your local
community; the Fordham community; a church group; the U.S. Secretary of
State, etc. Make sure you identify your audience at the beginning of your
paper, and make note of it on your annotated bibliography.
Monday, April 7: Complete an informal outline (1 page is fine) and a
tentative thesis statement, which you will bring to class prepared to discuss.
Thursday, April 11: Turn in your final paper.
