Smoking cigarettes in public – should it be banned?-Essay
The final essay in this course provides you an opportunity to craft an argument on a topic of your choosing. The topic should be the same one you explore in Assignment 3. If you decide to change your topic, be sure to discuss the change with me before proceeding with the essay.
This essay should be at least 1000 words and include three secondary sources from the annotated bibliography (Assignment 3).
Introduction:
Include an introductory section (1-3 paragraphs). The intro should work to personalize your topic. It should also introduce the topic in its most general terms. Spend some time informing your reader of the topic’s significance. Why should a general academic audience care about your research topic? Develop the conflicting perspectives on the specific issue that forms the center of your project. Then clearly state your position and begin developing it with sound reasoning.
The body:
Include carefully crafted paragraphs that center on clear argumentative claims as main ideas. Include transitional phrases and topic sentences at paragraph openings (use deductive order). Make sure the full paragraph centers on a single, clear main idea. Be strategic in your choices concerning the order of paragraphs. If you don’t understand the order of your body paragraphs, your reader certainly won’t.
Use evidence (facts, statistics, expert opinion, personal experience) to support your claims. Be explicit in tying your evidence back to your key argumentative claims. Discuss your reasoning. Use properly formatted (MLA) quotations when appropriate.
age with at least one author from an opposing side, and be sure to also anticipate further opposition.
The conclusion:
Provide a sense of closure. Use emotional appeals. Be creative.
